Meeting True Love

I didn’t know that taking a leap of faith and moving to San Francisco would be the first step towards meeting true love. It was early 2007 when I met Edgar Sotelo. Edgar and I kept getting introduced to each other by mutual friends, it got to the point that when our friends would re-introduce us we would giggle and say; “hello again.”

Edgar and I became really good friends, no benefits just a sincere fun friendship. I loved seeing Edgar, he always had a big smile and every time I saw him it made me feel good. I became very intrigued by him because most of the time I saw him wearing a scarf, even if it wasn’t that cold. I thought; “this guy is different he really takes care of himself.” I finally asked him why he always had a scarf? His response was “it’s to protect my throat,” and that is how I found out he worked in radio. We decided to get to know each other a little better and began to discover agape.

I soon learned that Edgar moved to San Francisco from Los Angeles, in pursuit of his love for making people smile through radio. He hosted the afternoon radio show of “La Kalle” on 107.5 FM, a Spanish Pop radio station. On the radio he is known as “Shoboy” like “your boy” but later I found out that I wanted him to be my boy. It took 8 months but it was worth the wait.

Our friendship started by sending each other text messages from inspirational quotes and no matter what we did, we always had a great time, still do. I’ll never forget the day he invited me to one of his promotions, a radio event outside of the radio station. We were in his black Mustang driving on Highway 680 going to Livermore CA, the windows were down, the sun was shining bright and we were singing along to “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by Fergie, so much fun. I’ve always loved that about him that he was never afraid to be silly and always wanted to make me smile.

We could be watching grass grow, as Edgar says, and would have fun doing it. In our entire relationship there has never been a dull moment with him; our conversations would go from silly things to politics to spirituality and we just kept clicking on every level. I knew I had met my true love because he always made me laugh and always built me up and saw the best in me, even when I couldn’t see it for my self.

After six months of being friends with Edgar and my feelings growing for him a twist happened in our destiny. While living in San Francisco, I was working and going to school full time. I also rehearsed and performed as a Mexican Folk dancer, one of my passions. I was dancing with a group by the name of “Atlatonin.” The same year that I met Edgar, our dance group was invited by the Chinese Consulate to go to China and represent Mexico. This was a way for China to prepare its citizens for the following year’s Beijing Olympics of 2008. They called it the “Cultural Olympics” with the goal of exposing the different cultures with in China.

It was an honor for me to represent my heritage in China and even better I was able to take my parents with me and they got to participate on this experience of a lifetime. Once we got to China we toured for two weeks straight from Beijing to Shanghai and the Great Wall of China. To this date one of my favorite pictures is of my parents in the traditional Mexican Outfits, holding up the Mexican flag with pride during a parade in Beijing.

This trip to China has a lot to do with the fact that Edgar and I are together till this day. Right before I left to China, Edgar surprised me with a very thoughtful gift. He got me a bracelet with the colors of the Mexican Flag (Green, White and Red) He said to me; “I want you to know that I am very proud of you for representing Mexico, have fun and I know you are going to be great.” I didn’t take that bracelet off during my entire trip. I was so excited and felt as if I had a piece of him with me. Mind you this entire time we are only friends and I had these strong feelings for him and knew he did too, but he did a better job of hiding them.

When I left to China in September of 2007, I missed him like crazy; he didn’t know that of course. Little did I know he missed me too. This time apart made us both realize that life was a lot better when we were together. On December 15, 2007 to be exact, he asked my parents if he could date me even before asking me. My dad responded to him “Well does my daughter want to date you?” I said of course. I could tell he had great family values and that he was a man of Faith and from that day on we became official boyfriend and girlfriend and till this day he will always be my eternal boyfriend. That is how our love story began, eight years ago.

Always remember that taking leaps of faith in love can be scary but you have to trust the process and truly get to know the person you may think is your true love. Have faith that God has the right person planned for you at the right place and at the right time. Don’t get anxious or desperate because that is when us women tend to lower our standards and settle for less. You are a daughter of a king (God) therefore, YOU DESERVE THE BEST.

Very inspirational! Every time I’ve looked at Shoboy’s pics of you two, it looks like your love is sincere, fun and will be eternal! I am Ecuadorian and come from a very traditional upbringing, when I learned that my now husband went out his way to communicate in Spanish with my mom who lives in Ecuador to ask for my hand, and had also spoken to my father (English speaker), I knew he loved me for who I was, respected me and my family values and that was very important for me. It’s been 8 years of knowing each other and a 1 1/2 of marriage. My husbands love for self and others, strength, work ethic, positive attitude and funny personality have been God’s greatest gifts!!! Although he is not religious, he does believe that there must be a higher being or “something” that put us in each other’s paths, gave us the gift of love and now the gift of life by expecting identical twin girls, which was a crazy surprise!!!
Nice blog! Keep it up :)
P.S. I’m writing you from my hospital bed as I am facing pre-term labor at 32 weeks :)
