THE SURPRISING PROPOSAL

When my Chuku (Nickname for Husband) and I started dating in December of 2007 I knew we were destined to get married one day. I always wondered how he would propose to me because he is so creative and thoughtful. Never did I imagine that one day he would propose to me at an airport, with our parents watching and him wearing a cast on his leg! By the way I wasn’t responsible for the cast on his leg.

My Chuku had torn his ACL years ago, when he jumped off a stage at a Rock Concert for the Legendary Mexican Band “El Tri” with Alex Lora. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it over the barricade when he jumped and he ended up hurting his knee but that didn’t stop him from crowd surfing!

Now let’s fast forward three years into dating, the last year being long distance. He was in Dallas due to his Morning Radio Show and I was in San Francisco working for GAP Corp. He kept procrastinating his knee surgery because he was always so busy until January of 2011. During that time my parents, abuelita Mago (Grandma) and I had to go to Guadalajara, Mexico to visit a sick Uncle. On our return from Guadalajara to San Francisco CA, our flight made a pit stop in Dallas TX.

During our 1 hour layover in Dallas my Chuku tricked me, he said he wanted to bring me food and I of course, never say no to food. To be completely honest I couldn’t wait to see him, even if it was only for an hour. I wanted to make sure he was recovering well from his surgery, and thank God he was.

He had everything prepared for the proposal. To my surprise he was taking advantage of the fact that his parents were visiting and taking care of him in Dallas during his surgery and my family and I were going to fly into Dallas for an hour. Like a gentleman he did the proper thing and previously called my parents to ask for my hand in marriage. Everyone was in on this secret except me. My Chuku proposed to me at the Dallas airport Terminal A. (HA, how can I forget)

He told me that him and his parents were going to bring us some food to the airport, but he did much more than that! He brought me my favorite, red velvet cup cakes. My love for cupcakes started ever since I was a little girl. My Chuku knew this and he would constantly surprise me with cupcakes as if they were a dozen roses but much yummier.

Finally the moment I had been waiting for all of my life was about to happen, but I had no idea! There he was limping over to me wearing a huge cast for his Knee, his parents by his side and a box of cupcakes coming towards me, my parents and my Abuelita Mago in Terminal A at the Dallas Airport. After we all hugged, he said, “I brought you your favorite cupcakes for your flight home” … I opened the box with excitement to eat one and that’s when I saw that one of the cupcakes spelled out “Marry Me.” Before I could even comprehend what was going on, I looked at my Chuku and it was too funny and cute because he attempted to get on one knee but he couldn’t due to his cast. With his eyes watering and his beautiful smile he opened another little box with a gorgeous engagement ring in it and asked if I would marry him. I said “YES, I thought you’d never ask” and then I broke out into tears of joy and love as I hugged him and kissed him until my grandma Mago stopped us from kissing so much. Our parents were smiling ear to ear and with tears of happiness in their eyes hugged us and congratulated us in the middle of the Airport.

It was the shortest 1-hour lay over and after that I had to carry my box of cup cakes and my beautiful ring to our final destination, San Francisco. I couldn’t stop shaking; my life was about to change for the better, I was finally going to be with the man I love, forever. As I was on the plane on our way to San Francisco, I literally and figuratively felt like I was in the clouds! The surprising proposal at the Dallas airport turned out to be one of the best memories of my life.

Congrats…lovely love history…!!! I have young daughters and I will like they pass as you for that kind of awesome marriage proposal. Again, be blessed junto al Choboy…!!! 😄💞
