Ariela’s Birth Story

Saturday December 3, 2016

It was Friday night and after doing my nightly prayer I thought, “I wonder how that moment will be when Ariela comes to this world, not knowing it was going to be that night.” At 12am I started feeling cramps, lower back pain, bloated etc. I thought this is weird, 2am came around and I immediately knew my water broke. My anxiety was gone; Ariela was finally on her way.

It all happened so fast, I remember telling my hubby, “Babe my water broke” he immediately jumped out of bed, his face looked like a deer in the headlights, so cute and funny at the same time. I was not feeling any pain and thank God I was super calm, I couldn’t believe it. Once we got dressed, Edgar got the hospital bag and I remember stuffing my pocket with cookies I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to get hungry, I had a feeling it was going to be a long day. We then walked out of our apartment building and remember it’s 2am and we saw a couple making out, another couple getting out of a cab getting home and Edgar and I were happily on our way to the hospital, ready for our lives to change in the most amazing way ever!

As soon as we got to the hospital my hubby was so nervous/anxious that he kept telling everyone from the security guard to the first nurse we saw; “my water broke” (his water broke) I was like no, actually my water broke, I’m the one who’s pregnant. Hilarious! Once we got admitted everything was smooth sailing. The lower Manhattan Presbyterian hospital nurses and staff were amazing and took really good care of us. We signed off on all the paper work and even the epidural documents even though in my heart I knew I didn’t want one, however I was open to the idea.

Thanks to God and thanks to everyone’s prayers, I went ahead and pushed baby Ariela without an epidural. In fact early that morning Doctor recommended Pitocin to help stimulate my labor. Pitocin is a drug that helps women in labor get contractions more frequently so that the cervix can dilate. I had so much faith in God that I did not need the epidural and was so focused on breathing and following my Doctors instructions. I really wanted to feel the contractions so that I knew exactly when to push and how hard to push as you need to ride the contractions during labor and trust me I sure felt them, wow!!!

Finally, when that time came, my hubby did an amaaazing job, he kept me motivated, reminding me how God was with me, putting wet towels on my forehead and fanning air on me, he was my number one fan. haha! It’s so weird because you get cold and hot. During this whole process I wanted to have one of my favorite songs called “Oceans” by our church Hillsong to be playing on repeat, it really brought me peace. I felt the baby coming and kept telling my Doctor; “I think she’s coming doctor,” Doctor, was like nope not yet you are barely 6 centimeters, in reality a woman in labor has to be 10 centimeters to give birth. Half an hour later by the grace of God I got to 9 centimeters and Doctor was like ok lets do this. Funny story: “I remember telling Edgar in the middle of everything; “Im so glad we went to Costco yesterday and have everything we need at home”, it’s crazzy where your mind goes during labor ahahah. The pain was intense and I pushed so hard that I was able to help baby Ariela come to this world in 5 contractions within 12 minutes, it was the greatest pain and joy that I have ever felt in my life! Overall my labor was from 2am to 4:43pm, an unforgettable moment was when my Doctor was like “Janet: extend your arms, so I did and I was able to pull Ariela out of me and put her in my chest, I will never forget that, but trust me it is all worth it once your baby looks at you in the eyes after coming into this world and there is an immediate Agape/Unconditional love bond that is created between the two of you and your family. Thank you Jesus for this beautiful experience of being a part of your miracle of life.

“ Im sharing my story because it was truly divine how it all happened and I know it can be a bit scary the thought of giving birth but with God everything is possible. It was the best painful and joyful day of my life, December 3, 2016, Ariela Natalia Sotelo’s birthdate.

EN ESPANOL

Sabado Diciembre 3, 2016

Gracias a Dios yo no sentía ningún dolor y estaba súper calmada, no pude creerlo.
